Hi! I'm Base Boy. A base is the number being multiplied!
And today, we'll both be going over the exponent rules with you guys!
And I'm Exponent Girl! An exponent tells how many times a base is being multiplied!
Zdrs: 2
a⁻ᵐ = 1 / aᵐ
Negative Exponent
AHHHH! A negative exponent, don't worry though, we can just take the reciprocal, no problem!
Zdrs: 3
aᵐ × aⁿ = a ᵐ ⁺ ⁿ
When the bases are the same, we multiply by adding the exponents!
Zdrs: 4
ⁿ√aᵐ = aᵐ/ ⁿ
Now, did you know, a radical can actually be turned into an exponent! Look!
Woah! Sweet! That's pretty cool!
Zdrs: 5
aᵐ ÷ aⁿ = aᵐ ⁻ ⁿ
That's easy! Just subtract the exponents now!
Now what if you wanna divide the same base but there's an exponent?
Zdrs: 6
aᵐ/ ⁿ = ⁿ√aᵐ
Got it! I'll turn this fractional exponent into a radical now!
Now, you can also do the inverse!
Zdrs: 7
(aᵐ) ⁿ = aᵐⁿ
A power raised to another power now?
Good question! You're supposed to multiply the exponents now!
Zdrs: 8
aᵐ × bᵐ = (ab) ᵐ
This time you'll just have to multiply the bases first!
Now say, what if it was the same exponent but different bases?
Zdrs: 9
a⁰ = 1 a ≠ 0
Now, what happens when the exponent is 0 and the base isn't 0?
Easy! If the base isn't 0 but the exponent is, the answer is always 1!
Zdrs: 10
aᵐ ÷ bᵐ = (a÷b) ᵐ
Wow, we're already onto our last exponent rule! I wonder what if we divided them now!
Yes! Divide!
We've made it so far, now if we multiplied the bases last time, what do you think we do now?
