  • I summon you all into the king's court for an overview of reports that explain the art of making a game.
  •
  • It would be most foolish to do so without comparing and contrasting game dev. story and game dev. tycoon.
  • Never heard of it ...
  • GAME DEV STORY V. GAME DEV TYCOON: WHY IT MATTERS
  • Zdrs: 2
  • Game dev story and game dev tycoon are important discourse in the game industry
  • Yes! This is because they gamified, making video games themselves.
  • So what? It's a game about making games?
  • Zdrs: 3
  • Precisely, game dev story and game dev tycoon are both about making games.
  • Game dev. story consists mainly of simulating running a game studio. Hiring workers and developing technology to do it.
  • Oh so you play as the boss of a company, intersting
  • Zdrs: 4
  • Silence! I am your king! and I demand to hear about Game dev story
  • Of course! The player takes control of a small studio and attempts to grow it. Workers have special abilities and attributes
  • My King! The process is gamified, so you decide on spending resources assigning workers
  • Yes, and reports state that game dev story oversimplifies game devlopment into skills points and money
  • Zdrs: 5
  • SPEAK! What comes Next!
  • the game tells the player which genre and plays combinations might be sucessful and what might fail
  • then that sounds a bit formulaic, is game development that simple? almost like a recipe?
  • No! Game development is much more complicated than that. The thing with games is that they need to turn complex activities into fun ones
  • Zdrs: 6
  • Let's hear about Game dev tycoon!
  • Despite being inspired by game dev story, game dev tycoon showcases more robust gameplay mechanics that are involved in running a game studio
  • It overhauls game dev story adds mechanics like the design and research that would have to go into developing a game, but theres still issue with this.
  • Could it be the employees are more important, but they are still treated as a resource?
  • Zdrs: 7
  • KNEEL BEFORE ME!
  • Hmm.. this must be what the reports were about.
  • But wait, even though developers are more important in the game they are still treated as a gameplay mechanic or resource
  • So the way the mechanic works is that a developer might be given a design score of 70 or a technology score of 50
  • What! But they're a person, they cannot be reduced to a number on a screen. Their skills essentially become statistics in order to help make a product.
  • Zdrs: 8
  • Real-life game developers cannot be reduced to statistics similar to a skill level or an H.P bar
  • So the game can't fully grasp what it's like to be a game developer
  • Yes! it fails to account for things like stress and burnout. There are real-life consequences to not hitting deadlines
  • Zdrs: 9
  • reports suggest things game developrs dont turn into mechanics become invisible
  • So it appears that to gamify a complex subject such as game development, you have to simplify it into a playable format first
  • At Ease Citizens,
  • Ah yes! for example, in game dev tycoon, the process of moving from one port to another is simple. but in reality this can be a significant challenge
  • So you must be talking about the concept of abstraction. things in real time are much harder then just clicking a button
  • Zdrs: 10
  • As the reports suggest the two games aren't trying to replicate everything that goes into game development and more broadly that isn't really a game's function
  • so games take certain parts of reality and turn them into mechanics?
  • Yes! So essentially games are models of systems that exist in the real world, and models can't show everything. Neither game replicated everything that goes into a studio
  • Zdrs: 11
  • CAN YOU GIVE AN EXAMPLE OF OTHER GAMES THAT LEAVE OUT TOTAL IMMERSION IN FAVOUR OF PLAYABILITY?
  • THROUGH OUR UNDERSTANDING OF GAME DEV. STORY AND GAME DEV. TYCOON WHAT PARTS OF GAME DEVELOPMENT DO YOU THINK ARE LEFT OUT?
  • Questions
  • IS IT POSSIBLE TO SIMULATE WHAT IT'S LIKE TO MAKE A GAME COMPLETELY?
  • Zdrs: 12
  • REFRENCES
