- "it is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note, insofar as her citizens of color are concerned. Instead of honoring this sacred obligation, America has given the negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked insufficient funds."
- MLK was using a reference to Abraham Lincoln. in Lincolns speech, he said "Four score and seven years ago." it was a saying that a very well known and popular president also fought for slavery and rights.
- Ethos
- "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character"
- He is using an emotional tie when he is discussing "little boys and girls."
- Pathos
- he is using an analogy when he says "the negro people a bad check, a check which has come back marked insufficient funds."
- Logos
- He wants equality between colored and white people. If he can get a couple of white people too agree then that will spread exponentially.
- The audience is persuaded by Martin Luther King Jr.'s appeal to their emotions. His word choice made the speech inspiring. For example, him using "withering injustice" persuade his audience to listen and follow his message.
- "... millions of negro slaves who had been in the flames of withering injustice."
- MLK is saying that the note was a promise, a reason why black men and white men would both have equal rights.
- "This note was a promise that all men--yes, black men as well as white men--would be guaranteed the unalienable rights of life."
