- The butterfly species, Apatura iris, more known as the Purple Emperor is located in and around the woodland in much of central southern, southeast, and eastern England. They are rare among butterflies in England due to their unique behavioral traits. That trait is that, it eats rotting animal corpses and feces in order to avoid competition for the flowers among the other butterflies.
- Adaptation
- More butterflies of various species come to the English church to get some of the food from the flowers. However, there are not enough flowers to go around for all of the butterflies
- Differential Survival
- All of the butterflies are competing for the flowers however not all of them are the same species. The purple empower has other ideas.
- Diffrential Reproduction
- The purple emperor chooses to eat rotting animal corpses as well as feces. Which is an example of a behavioral trait or adaptation.
- Since they choose to eat rotting animal corpses rather than flowers, they now have no competition for their resources and can freely eat all they want.
- The purple emperor butterfly will then pass on and teach their offspring to hunt for animal corpses as well as feces so that they can keep on living with no need to worry about other butterflies taking their food.
