- Priya was helping mom with the food. She asked her mom what time it was back in India. It was just 6:30 am. She used to sing a song about the weather: “Dum dum diga diga, mosum biga biga . . .” Priya didn't want her mother to see her tears when she felt a sharp pang in her chest as her grandmother’s voice flooded her mind.
- When Priya went to the supermarket, she thought it was cold and unfriendly. Her mom wanted her to be happy so she asked her daughter if she wanted anything.
- At school, Priya hid her food, so that any kids saw that she wasn't eating peanut butter sandwiches. So to stop that, she told her mother to buy a peanut butter jar and told her mom how to make the peanut butter sandwiches.
- When the Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwiches tired her, she started buying food from the cafeteria. She ate waterygreen beans and lumpy blobs of mashed potatoes. No meat or chicken. Lindsay, a blond girl form her class, asked her, "Priya, why don't you eat meat?"
- Why don't you eat meat?
- Umm, well...
- Priya thought about telling Lindsay that when Gods came to Earth, they came in different ways. And how Brahma came to live with the humans as a cow. So, Hindus didn't eat meat, fearing that they would harm a god.
- Priya helped her mom scoop the rest of the Gulab jamun. She took a deep breath and told her mom that she wanted to take the food to school and share it. Priya's mom said O.K. She wanted to ask Lindsay about her country after she discover that Lindsay was Muslim. She'll ask her tomorrow.
