- Salva lives a happy life with his family in Sudan. His family is a respected family in the village. Everything is fine until one day a war starts because the rebels don't want to practice Islam. Salva is separated from his family and he finds a way out with other people from his village. Salva has no idea where his family members are.

- Salva and others are on their way out of their village and are headed for Ethiopia because there are refugee camps where they can settle there. They face a lot of difficulties on their journey including shelter, food and hunger. Salva makes a new friend Marial but he dies from a possible lion attack.

- Salva continues his journey and his uncle Jewirr joins them. He has a rifel and hunts animals for food. Up next was the desert on Salva's journey. They travelled for days through the desert with a struggle for water until they finally crossed the desert. Now they were headed for the refugee camps in Ethiopia, but soldiers came and killed Salva's uncle so Salva was a lone again.
- Many people die on their journey to Ethiopia. Salva made it to a refugee camp in Ethiopia. He settled there for year and moved to other camps. He had a friend named Michael who thought him English. After years of staying at the camp now Salva was a 20 year old man. America was choosing a few healthy boys to take to America. Salva was chosen to go to New York he was really happy.

- Salva was now in New York. He had a new family and new sibling. One day he received an email from a cousin of his that his father was in sick in Sudan in a hospital. He went to Sudan and saw his father. They were both really happy to see each other. Salva got his education and starting giving speeches and raising money for people in Sudan. At last he was succesful.

- Nya is a girl who lives in a village in Sudan. Nya's family and other people don't have access to water so they have to walk for hours to the pond to get water. Salva raises money and builds a well in Nya's village so they can have easy access to water. Now Nya can go to school. Nya says thank you to Salva.
