  • The French and Indian War. A battle between France and England from 1756-1763, fighting over land. It lasted 7 years and when it was over, England won. They lost many lives (both sides), but England had gained all of Canada, that France once had. England spent great deals of money fighting the war, leaving them in debt.

  • After the war, the Proclamation of 1763 was put into play because they wanted to make sure that all of the Native American relationships were stabilized.

  • Taxes Unleashed: 1764 - 1766
  • After the war, the British unleashed many different taxes to pay off the debt from the French and Indian war. There was the Sugar Act of 1764, which taxed molasses and sugar imports. the Quartering Act of 1764-1765, which the colonists had to house and provide for the British soldiers. The Stamp Act of 1765, taxing all printed material and the Townshend Act of 1766, taxing everyday household items like glass, paint, and tea.

  • The Boston Massacre was an event when an angry mob of colonists gathered near a customs home that British soldiers were guarding. They started pelting snowballs at the British guards, causing the troops to open fire at the mob. 5 were dead and 6 were wounded after the Boston Massacre.
  • When the Townshend Act was repealed, a new act came. The Tea Act of 1773. This was when England allowed the East India company to become a monopoly, which was the colonists only source of tea. They colonies had to pay a tax for the tea, which led to boycotts on the tea that the Sons of Liberty caused.
  • This was the colonists way of protesting. The Boston Tea Party of 1773. They threw 92,000 pounds of tea into the Boston Harbor, protesting the Tea Act. They went aboard and threw tea from the ships Beaver, Dartmouth, and Eleanor. All of the tea was estimated to cost about $1 million and filling 18.5 million teabags.
