In Santa Cecilia, Mexico, Imelda Rivera is the wife of a musician who left her and her 3 year old daughter Coco behind in his pursuit of music.
Miguel, the great grandson of Coco accidentally breaks the picture frame of her great great great grandmother and Coco, but unfolds the picture to reveal his great great great grandfather's figure, but with his face missing and him holding Ernesto de la Cruv's guitar, making him believe he is his ancestor.
Miguel steals the guitar of Ernesto and gets cursed and sent to the land of the land of the dead where he meets his dead family, but he must be blessed to return by sunrise or he will die. He refuses to be blessed because he will not be allowed to play music ever again.
Miguel meets Hector, who agrees to help him get the blessing of Ernesto, and Miguel will take his photo to his daughter.
Miguel gets to Ernesto de la Cruz but it is revealed he is the one who murdered Hector. He kicks Miguel and Hector out.
Miguel realises Hector is his real great great grandfather because he mentions his daughter Coco, Hector can give his blessing but he needs to give him his photo that Ernesto stole to Miguel.
