  • The Tennis Court Oath - June 20, 1789
  • We swear not to separate until a new constitution is established for France!
  • The Third Estate members were frustrated and angered by their lack of power and control in the Estates-General, declaring themselves in the National Assembly. After being locked out of their meeting hall, they gathered in a nearby indoor tennis court and swore not to separate until France had a new constitution. This event marked the beginning of the French Revolution and the agreement and protest between the people against the monarchy.

  • Storming of the Bastille - July 14, 1789
  • Today, the chains of tyranny are broken! Liberty begins here!
  • The Parisians stormed the Bastille, a royal fortress and prison which symbolised the king’s absolute power. After a fight, they took over control of the Bastille and freed prisoners, and killed the fortress’s commander. This made the king pull back his soldiers from Paris and brought back a finance minister named Jacques Necker.

  • Abolition of Feudalism - August 4, 1789
  • The National Assembly abolishes the feudal system entirely.
  • The National Constituent Assembly abolished the feudal system, ending the privileges for the nobles and clergy. This meant that nobles and clergy lost their special privileges, third-estate members and peasants no longer had to pay feudal taxes and tithes, establishing equality among citizens.
