The Burning of Washington, D.C., occurred on August 24, 1814, during the War of 1812 between the United States and Great Britain. British forces, led by Major General Robert Ross and Rear Admiral George Cockburn, successfully invaded Washington, D.C., and set fire to several key government buildings, including the White House and the Capitol.

Let us do a counter attack. It might be risky but it also might work
On September 10 1813, the Battle of Lake Erie took place. The United States had a smaller and less experienced fleet, against the British fleet commanded by Robert Heriot Barclay. The turning point came when Perry led a daring counterattack, breaking the British line and forcing the surrender of the enemy fleet, after facing casualties in the Battle. The American victory secured control of Lake Erie, disrupted British supply lines, and boosted American morale in the Northwest.

Americans desired to go to war with Britain so they could take over Canada. The War Hawks were westerners who were rallying up support for war.
