  • To wrap up this analysis, at the end of the chapter in the graphic novel, Offred and Ofglen stop by a church with dead doctors hanged on a wall by the church. The colors used for this scene were of no saturation and grayscale - the exact gloomy and depressing tones used as thought by McCloud. This demonstrates the vibe of the environment strongly, as of course it would be depressing walking by dead people who are hanged in a gloomy area.

  • In chapter 8, McCloud speaks on how color can be the environment. We begin to understand how greyscale colors of low contrast can represent a gloomy, depressing tone, whereas more saturation and colors can express a joyful or energetic tone. When Offred leaves her home to meet the Commander's Wife, it is seen how the Commander's Wife lives in an area of much bright blue color compared to the depressing gray tones of the Handmaid's homes. This leads to an inference that the Commander's Wife, someone of higher superiority, indulges in a higher quality of life physically and mentally than the Handmaid's.

  • In chapter 8, McCloud states how colors can express ideas. When Offred and Ofglen went shopping, they were disturbed by Japanese tourists asking for photos. From the graphic novel, you can see how there is a contrast in idea of color - where the Offred and Ofglen are wearing the same red dress and white hair covering, while the tourists are seen in a variety of different clothes of different colors. This can express the idea of freedom the tourists have over the Handmaid's, with the will to dress however they like.
