  • Hmm... I wonder how I can prevent a can of soda from exploding in the freezer.
  • The liquid in the can expands inside the can when frozen and the volume becomes greater than what the can was designed to hold. This pressure causes the can to explode
  • Lets go downstairs to investigate this!
  • As the liquid freezes and expands the CO2 squeezes out to the outside edge of the frozen liquid increasing pressure on the can's walls once it becomes a solid
  • How interesting! Matters changing from a liquid to a solid are so tightly compressed I can't shake the liquid inside the can anymore.

  • Liquid
  • Freezer system= removal of heat
  • Freezing is a change of state from liquid to a solid
  • Gas
  • C02 release and pressure= exploding can
  • When a can expands in a freezer the heat is removed mainly through the freezers system which is designed to absorb heat and air from the item inside it
  • How can we use our knowledge about particles to prevent cans of drink exploding in the freezer?
  • Easy! don't freeze them for too long and consider pouring a bit of the liquid out before freezing to allow room for expansion
