(Grips Bob’s hand very strongly and is trying to appear confident)"Thank you, Bob! Let's get down to business!"
"Hi Raj, it is amazing to meet you! Welcome to Canada my friend!"
hmm, firm handshake I guess.
Introduction:Scene: Bob reaches out his hand to Raj with a welcoming smile on his face. They are both in the office.
Zdrs: 2
"Before we start, I just want to tell you how much we value a respectful and open dialogue here in Canada so feel free to speak if you’d like."
"Yes, um sure, let’s skip the pleasantries. Let’s talk numbers!"
He seems inpatient, that was weird. Anyways, I will keep being my polite self.
The First Misunderstanding:Scene: They both sit at a conference table. Bob opens his laptop to start his presentation.
Zdrs: 3
"This is way too slow. Why can't we just get to the point? Your presentation could be much faster!"
"But Canadian meetings are so slow! You just waste time!"
"Oh um, well, I like to give some context and ensure everyone is on the same page..."
this is very uncomfortable.
The Wrong Kind of "Feedback"Scene: Bob gives a presentation about a new project. Raj interrupts every few seconds.
Zdrs: 4
"Thanks for your feedback, Raj! And to be clear, I’m sorry if I went a little slow earlier. I didn’t mean to bore you!"
"But you weren’t slow, Why are you apologizing?"
this guy is so weird.
(nervously laughs) "Oh, it’s just… us Canadians! We apologize for everything, even when we shouldn’t"
The Overuse of "Sorry"Scene: After the meeting, Bob walks Raj to the elevator.
Zdrs: 5
"I have an idea! Why don’t we make a deal right now? I’ll take charge of the project, and we can move forward immediately!"
"Well, in Canada, we like to make sure everyone agrees on the decision first. You know, we like lots of input, some feedback..."
You Canadians are too polite! You need to be more direct! Let’s just do it!
oh no, what is this guy thinking!!!
THE END!!!
The Overuse of "Sorry"Scene: After the meeting, Bob walks Raj to the elevator.
Zdrs: 6
"Well, here in Canada, we usually … take our time to agree on things before we shake hands, you know?
"Let’s make a deal, Bob! A handshake, and we’re done, Yes?"
Yeah sure man, glad we settled this. Have a good one!
Maybe I should apologize.. I am so confused right now!
The Final MisunderstandingScene: Raj tries to shake Bob’s hand again, overly enthusiastically
