Jacob (Joseph's Dad) favored Joseph the most out of all of his 12 sons, which left the other sons envious of the preferential treatment toward Joseph.
The immoral choice that the brothers made was trying to kill their brother Joseph as he was being favored by God and by their father.
The brothers end up not killing Joseph but they sell him into slavery.
Around 9 years after they sold their brother Joseph into slavery. They travel to Egypt because their home is struggling with a famine. They go to beg for food and that is when they realize that the King is their own brother Joseph.
When they realize that it is their brother Joseph they immediately regret the way they treated him. The moral lesson that the brothers learned is to net let jealousy and greed take over our decision making and learn to to be happy for others.
The brothers realized that they made a mistake and apologized to Joseph. Joseph forgave them and helped them as they are his brothers.
The role that this story plays in salvation history is that is is important to forgive and make up. In doing so God will forgive us as we forgive others and we can start our journey in gaining his trust back. Also throughout these problematic actions it is important that these events happened because they were able to continue the covenant.
