"I wish I hadn't smashed my coral bracelet, for you might have had it,"
What fun! Who are they from?
I did know you had a lover ?!
These are for Miss March.
Mrs. M. has made her plans, i dare say, and will play her cards well, early as it is.
She told that fib about her mamma, as if she did know,...She'd be so nice if she was only got up in style.
You look like a little beauty!
Meg was invited to a Vanity Fair by the Moffats. Meg is determined to pack the fanciest of her possessions because of the Moffat's status. The Moffats are wealthy so Meg receives help from her sisters and mother when packing.
Meg wasn't her happiest at the Moffats because of the finer items the girls possessed. Her poplin seemed shabby compared to the other's dresses and this made her feel out of place. During the evening of the small party, Meg had gotten a box of flowers from Laurie and a note from Marmee which made her feel better. The girls all questioned who was Laurie thinking that he was Meg's lover.
Please don't tell them at home about my dress tonight, They won't understand the joke, and it will worry Mother.
Then why did you do it?
Meg was having a splendid time this evening enjoying herself. Her evening was ruined when she overheard a conversation while waiting for her dance partner to bring her ice. Meg heard people talking about her poplin, Mrs.M's plans, fibs, and wanted to offer her a dress for Thursday. They also planned on calling Laurie to accompany her. Meg swept up her feelings and tried not to show how offended she was, she had a restless night.
Meg was offered to get dressed up by Belle because they didn't want her to wear her poplin. Meg was turned into a fine lady by Belle and her maid. People who hadn't spoken to her before had showed interest in her because of the way she was dressed. People asked questions and were asking to be introduced to her as well. Sallie was even jealous that Meg had looked more pretty than her.
At the party Meg spots Laurie and goes to talk to him. Laurie bluntly says that he doesn't like Megs appearance because she looks so different. Laurie apologizes for being so rude to Meg and asks if she would like to dance with him to which she agrees. Towards the end of the night Meg asks Laurie to tell her family that she was having a good time and not to mention her fancy appearance. Laurie tells Meg that he knows she isn't happy and Meg him she's getting tired of being there.
Meg finally returns home and confesses all that took place at the Moffatt's to Marmee and Jo. Marmee was upset that these rumors were being spread around and told the girls to never repeat the rubbish they heard. Marmee tells the girls that she only wishes for them to be happy and that doesn't require a rich man. She tells Meg that she's sorry that she allowed her to go because of what happened.
I'd rather see you poor men's wives, if you were happy, beloved, contented, than queens on thrones, without self-respect and peace.
