Importance: While Gatsby, Daisy, Nick, Jordan, and Tom are driving through the city, Tom feels a mix of emotions. He is angry at Gatsby for trying to ruin his marriage. At this point in the novel, Tom realizes what has been going on between Daisy and Gatsby and he is determined to put an end to it.

Importance: This rivalry between Tom and Gatsby has reached its climax. Gatsby confidently told Tom that Daisy never loved him and that they were in love with each other. Tom felt angry but still believed that he had the upper hand. He felt Daisy and Myrtle slipping from his grasp and he wasn't about to lose both of them.

I believe that Tom is winning over Gatsby according to the "points system". Gatsby gets many points because Daisy visited him, complimented him, and also took his side. However, when she confessed that she also loved Tom it gave Tom some points and showed that he had control over the situation. Gatsby also lost his cool and got angry which made him lose some points. Tom was confident and showed that he knew Daisy wouldn't betray him, showing that he was winning. Although Gatsby was also confident, he could not get Daisy to agree with everything he said which made him seem vulnerable and weak.

"...I heard a low husky sob and saw that the tears were overflowing down his face" (Pg. 151).
Importance: As Daisy and Gatsby were leaving town, Myrtle ran into the street thinking that Tom was in the car. However, Daisy didn't slow down and ended up hitting and killing Myrtle because she was so worked up from before and couldn't think straight. Tom is devastated and there is no telling what he might do when he finds out that Daisy killed Myrtle.
