- In 1776, the English colonies of Great Britain waged war against King George III and English parliament.
- The French crown decides to finance and aid the English rebels. The money put towards this military endeavor, in addition to the Seven Years' War a decade prior, propels the French government into massive economic debt.
- Due to Louis XVI and France's immense spendings, the crown was forced to increase taxes to make up for the country's debt.
- To move forward with plans on higher taxation, Louis XVI demanded the assembly of the Estates General, consisting of the First Estate (clergy), the Second Estate (nobles), and the Third Estate (made up of everyone else in France).
- Due to a lack of proper representation, the Third Estate reformed itself into the National Assembly Of France, working to overthrow King Louis XVI and make France a republic similar to the United States Of America.
- In 1793, the National Assembly announced that they would be abolishing slavery throughout any and all French lands. The result brought about chaos in France and French colonies.
