IDEA stands for Individuals Disabilities Education Act. It is a law that provides free appropriate public education for eligible children with disabilities.

It also provides special education and other related services for children who qualify. This includes the opportunity to learn side by side with students their age, which is called a least restrictive environment.

When are these services available for children?
Under Part C of IDEA, children that are between the ages of birth through age 2, are provided with early intervention services. Children ages 3 through 21 receive special education through Part B of IDEA.

IDEA also makes sure that the rights of children with disabilities along with the parents of these children are protected. Educators and parents are ensured through IDEA to have the needed tools to provide the best chance for the positive educational results through assistance from the state.

Social inclusion is promoted, inclusive classrooms are opportunities for students with disabilities to have interactions with students without disabilities which reduces the social isolation while also promoting a sense of belonging.

Does this cost anything how can students get started?
There is no cost to the parents. Students must go through an evaluation before receiving any services. Parents have access to this information if they want their child to go through the process.

This law pertains to those individuals in the public setting. Students in the private settings do not fall under this law. however private settings have different requirements and services.

The National Association of Elementary Principals website provides ways to getting started along with some methods of implementation and other resources. The official website of the U.S. government provides all of the information from IDEA as well. A third resource would be Star Autism Support. They have a flyer that covers practical tips to ensure compliance with IDEA.

ASK Resource Center has come up with 6 principles that can help with this and they also provide other information. There is a handbook for advocating for students with disabilities provided by the Public Counsel website that has more details on the subject. COPAA is another source that really covers the legal side of the law.

As professionals that must follow the IDEA legal requirements, it is important that we show the importance of personal character. We can do this by providing confidential professionalism that shows compassion and respect to those families in which we are working with so that a supportive environment that offers equitable opportunities exists.
