My son shall be the best king, other than me, of course.
A social system existing in medieval Europe in which people worked and fought for nobles who gave them land and protection in return.
Nobles
I guess I should go manage my fiefs today.
The pope was the leader of the church in the kingdom and managed an area called a diocese. The church was very powerful in most parts of medieval Europe, which made the pope very powerful as well. Not only that, but the church also got a tithe of 10 percent from all the people, which made some popes very rich.
Knights
What am I supposed to do now?
The leader of the land was the king, or monarch, and he had quite a lot of power. However, the king couldn't run the land by himself, so he divided it up between the Barons, or nobles. In return for the land, the Barons pledged their loyalty and soldiers to the king and the land.
Peasants
This is boring.
The high-ranking nobles ruled large amounts of land called fiefs. They reported directly to the king, and they were very powerful. Their job was to maintain an army that was at the king's service.
Knights could be called into war at any time by their nobles. The knights owned their own land, and anything on it, including the peasants, livestock, crops, and village.
Most people in medieval Europe were peasants, which meant that they belonged to the owner of the land they lived on, along with their livestock, crops, and village. They had a rough life. Some peasants were considered free and could work as carpenters, bakers, or blacksmiths. However, some others were more like slaves. These peasants owned nothing, worked long hours six days a week, and often had barely enough to eat at night.
