  • After a five year journey, the HMS Beagle had finally arrived at the Galapagos Islands. In a five-week stint, Darwin investigated animals such as turtles and finches.

  • He noticed that although these two islands were very close geographically, the turtle populations were different. Upon closer investigation, he realized that these differences were based on their habitats. That still left him puzzled as to how they evolved that way.
  • During his voyage, Darwin also observed Galapagos finches. These were later found to diverge from one common ancestor through divergent evolution. Divergent evolution is a form of evolution where multiple different species result from a common ancestor with similar internal structures, but different functions and characteristics to adapt to their environment.

  • On a different island, he again noticed that the species of finches were different. Upon further research, he concluded that the difference between the birds was based on the different environments, and that the "fittest" traits for the given environment would prosper. These two subject groups contributed to his finding of evolution through natural selection.
  • Hello, Charles Darwin. My name is Alfred Wallace, and I've made a breakthrough animal evolution discovery. It's a sophisticated process that involves more advantageous features becoming more widespread in an environment, and it overturns every previous scientific understanding of evolution. I'm planning to write a book about it. Any consultation would be helpful. Kind regards, Alfred Russel Wallace
