  • 1 Hi Rebecca, how are you? I see that you have applied for the mechanical engineering NASA.
  • 3 I'm glad, your resume is outstanding. Princeton University? Impressive. What are you hoping to gain from this job?
  • 2 Hello Mr. Botowski. Yes, I saw the opening and decided to apply as soon as the application opened up.
  • 5 Excellent. I read that you are Mexican/Cuban American? How do you feel that your ethnicity, along with gender has impacted you in terms of working in this male dominated field?
  • 4 I want to gain the experience of working for a company that is so prestige and well rounded. One that knows how to manage their workers and keep information confidential.
  • 8 I'm sorry to hear that. I can assure you, you are much more qualified for this position and your hard work does not go unrecognized.
  • 7 I was often times judged by counselors because of the stereotypes Latinos have to face. I was often times told that I wouldn't succeed because of this, that I would become a farm worker or house maid instead. Learning how to get past this was both traumatizing and heartbreaking but all worth it.
  • 6 Sometimes when I attended lectures, especially the upper divisions courses in Astrophysics, I was one of three girls in the room. Keep in mind there was about 200 students in this course.
  • 10 You sure did. Is there anything that you want to ask before we finish this interview?
  • 9 I am glad because I know I made the right decision on applying to this position.
  • 12 Great, I will contact you in a few days with our decisions.
  • 11 No, I think I am all set to go
  • 14 Likewise Rebecca.
  • 1313 Thank you for your time. Have a great day.
  • 1 Good afternoon Molly, please take a seat. How are you?
  • 2 I am doing pretty well how are you Mr. Botowski?
  • 3 It’s good to hear and I am well too. I know you have a Bachelor’s in Engineering, with a specialization in Mechanical Engineering from Harvard.
  • 4 Really impressive. Is there any obstacle you had coming into this career?
  • 6 One thing I did find difficult was engaging with my peers in lectures since the majority were male and wanted to work with their male classmates.
  • 5 I can say otherwise. My mother was head of the department of Astrophysics and Engineering and my aunt was one of my professors at Harvard.
  • 7 Why do you believe that is so?
  • 9 But then I remembered that my mother was able to do what I wanted to. She along with my aunt were my inspirations.
  • 8 Oftentimes I heard these classmates make remarks such as “women aren’t as intelligent as men” and “you’re too pretty to be in this field” which oftentimes made it harder for me to continue in this field.
  • 10 It’s good to hear your inspirations came from your family and I’m sorry you had those experiences.
  • 11 I can assure you everyone in our facilities are rather welcoming. Tell me, how were your experiences with being an assistant engineer?
  • 12 That was very different thankfully. I was supported throughout the whole time and no one doubted my skills.
  • 13 Very great to hear. You are a great candidate for a program.
  • 14 Thank you. I would hope with my education and experience I would be.
  • 15 Do you have any questions for me? Don’t be afraid to ask. If not, have a nice rest of your day.
  • 16 No I have none, thank you. Have a wonderful day
  • 1 Good morning Vanessa, it is lovely to meet you. How are you?
  • 3 Wonderful. So I see you graduated from MIT with a Bachelors in Astronomy and Mechanical Engineering along with a Master’s and PhD in Engineering. That is outstanding work.
  • 4 Thank you, it wasn’t easy that is for sure. All of that came with obstacles that were hard to overcome.
  • 2 I am doing great, how are you?
  • 5 May you elaborate further?
  • 7 As a woman, I heard comments about “belonging in the kitchen” especially at my age and my social status. I was always told to rely on government assistance so I wouldn’t waste my time earning a degree that would get me nowhere because of my gender.
  • 6 W- Being African American, my work was often looked over. I was told by a lot of my colleagues that I would be a “mother on welfare” just like others that were the same race as I am. It is a stereotypical insult that made me feel like I wasn’t capable of finishing my studies.
  • 8 I can happily say that I defied those stereotypes. Reading The Politics of Black Feminist Thought helped me realize that women have been experienced these problems for centuries.
  • 9 Like mentioned in that reading, women have been overlooked for the work they have done in their fields/hobbies/ at home, etc. That book really helped me through my college years.
  • 10 That must’ve been an emotional roller coaster. I apologize for the way these classmates and individuals have treated you.
  • 11 Here at NASA, we know how hard working you all were. Patricia Collins is an exceptional author and I am glad you got the chance to read the book.
  • 12 She is wonderful. I studied intersectionality and feminism and the problems women face but I never expected it to apply to me. I am beyond happy to know that I got through this, no matter how many times I gave up emotionally and mentally.
  • 13 What matters is that you were able to succeed in the career you strived for. That takes dedication and passion which is what we look for, for this position.
  • 14 I can assure you that I have both of these qualities.
  • 15 That will conclude our interview. Is there anything you’d like to ask or discuss? If not, I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.
  • 16 No I am good, thank you for having me and enjoy your day.
  • 1 Good morning Anna, how are we today?
  • 3 Lovely, thank you. Bachelor’s in Mechanical and Biomedical engineering I see as well as a Master’s and a PhD from Dartmouth? That is quite impressive if I do say so myself. How have you managed to do all this while still standing on two feet? *laugs*
  • 2 Good morning Mr. Botowksi. I am doing pretty well. How about yourself?
  • 4 *laughs* Well all I can say is that it did not come without obstacles. My gender and race had an effect on how people including counselors, professors, and my own family treated me. What helped me out was reading on how women experienced different disadvantages. One of the readings was Racial Ethnic Women’s Labor by Evelyn Nakano Glenn.
  • 6 You’re doing an exceptional job. I applaud you. What were the types of comments that you received from your families? It is interesting and unfortunate to know that you had to experience that.
  • 5 Her reading showed the distribution of occupations for women of color and showed how little some races had jobs in certain areas compared to others. It is unfortunate that race plays a big part in employment and it saddens me that happened. However, it is good to know that I am defying stereotypes and societal norms by occupying jobs that no man or woman ever thought my race would.
  • 7 They expected me to complete a career in the medical field such as become a PA, Surgeon, Pediatrician, etc. They told me I would never succeed in a field like engineering, especially mechanical. It was heartbreaking but my parents and sisters did believe in me, unlike my uncles and cousins.
  • 8 I bet this was a big slap in the face to them, knowing you were able to complete something they believed you never would.
  • 9 It was. I did not invite them to my graduation or graduation party for any of my degrees. *laughs*
  • 10 *laughs* Good to know. How are you so passionate about a career when you had a lot of people doubting you?
  • 11 It was not easy. Knowing that I wanted to impress my parents and have a good future for myself was what pushed me. I have a love for engineering and could not stop at a Bachelor’s. It was enjoyable completing my degrees.
  • 12 That is some dedication. If you do not have any questions, I would say you are free to go. We will inform you when we have updates. Have a nice day.
  • 13 Thank you so much, I have no questions so I will be on my way. Have a wonderful day.
