On the last night of his presidency john Adams wrote his last commissions to submit judges into the supreme court
On Thomas Jeffersons first day as president he found these commissions and told Madison not to deliver the commissions
Do not deliver these!!!
This is Ridiculous. I don't want all of John Adams friends on MY supreme court

When one of the judges, William Marbury, didn't get his commission letter from John Adams and he was mad. He then filed a case in the supreme court to get his spot as a justice.
john Marshall told Marbury that the law that gives the POTUS the power to send commissions is unconstitutional and the court agrees
The case still went to court and Marbury lost 4-0 and wasn't able to be a justice on the supreme court
Marshall Established judicial review, the power to SCOTUS to judge wether rights are unconstitutional and take them down
