Industrijska organizacija je područje studija koje istražuje razlike između "savršenog" natjecanja među tvrtkama koje se nalaze u ekonomskim udžbenicima i "nesavršenom" natjecanju u stvarnom svijetu. Jedan alat izveden iz polja je Michael Porterova analiza "pet sila", od samog početka njegove temeljne knjige "Competitive Strategy". Porter je razvio analizu pet sila kao rigorozniju varijaciju široko korištene SWOT analize. Okvir se fokusira na razinu konkurencije unutar industrije za procjenu strateškog položaja tvrtke. Za razliku od SWOT analize, pet sila istražuje poslovno okruženje, a ne ispitivanje određene tvrtke. Zajedno s PEST analizom, dublje ulazi u mogućnosti i prijetnje SWOT-a.
