In order to retain Spanish vocabulary and make verb conjugation more natural, students must practice using new verbs in context. In this activity, students will create a character and discuss what they should order and what they would prefer to order. Students should use commonly encountered vocabulary and must relate the verbs to other learned vocabulary and think about the use of infinitives. To practice other forms besides the yo form, instruct students to have cells targeting other subject pronouns.
Extended Activity
Have students present their characters, giving an oral presentation that includes some background. Students could include personality traits, habits, or statements about what the character likes or dislikes. Students could also use the future tense to say what will happen. This is a great way to continue to integrate vocabulary rather than learn it in isolated chunks.

Student Instructions
Create a storyboard that illustrates various characters should eat or order a certain item but prefer something else. Use verbs like "deber", "preferir" and "desear".
Boost engagement by setting up short partner dialogues using food-related verbs. This lets students hear, speak, and respond to each other in context, helping them internalize vocabulary more naturally.
Pair up students and give each pair a simple prompt (e.g., ordering at a café or deciding what to eat at home). Clear scenarios make it easier for students to use new verbs in a real-life setting.
Demonstrate a quick exchange using the target verbs (like deber, preferir, and pedir). This helps students see how to structure their own dialogues and lowers anxiety.
Let students act out their dialogues, then switch roles so both partners use each verb. Repeating with role reversal ensures every student practices all forms and subject pronouns.
Ask students what felt easy or tricky about using the verbs in conversation. Reflecting helps students notice growth and set goals for next time.
Create a character-based storyboard where students use verbs like deber, preferir, and desear to discuss what characters should order and what they would prefer. This helps students practice vocabulary in context while making learning interactive and engaging.
Encourage students to create scenarios or characters who must make choices at a restaurant, using verbs such as pedir (to order), comer (to eat), and beber (to drink) in full sentences. This reinforces natural language use and connects verbs to real-life situations.
Have students write and present short dialogues featuring different subject pronouns and food-related verbs. Using activities like oral presentations or character role-play helps students reinforce conjugation across multiple forms.
Common and practical verbs include desear (to want), preferir (to prefer), deber (should), pedir (to order), servir (to serve), traer (to bring), comer (to eat), and beber (to drink).
Assign tasks where students write sentences for various characters, ensuring each sentence uses a different subject pronoun (like yo, tú, él/ella, etc.). This encourages the use of multiple verb forms in context.
