Amos en Boris heeft niet veel personages in het verhaal. Een leuke manier om je leerlingen om verbinding te maken met te krijgen en begrijpen van de twee hoofdpersonen is om ze te vergelijken en het contrast van hun kwaliteiten. William Steig richt zich veel op hoe verschillend de enorme walvis en de kleine muis fysiek maar hoe hun persoonlijkheid zijn vergelijkbaar.
Leerlingen kunnen de tekst te gebruiken om karaktertrekken en fysieke eigenschappen van Boris en Amos te vinden.
