Er zijn veel thema's, symbolen en motieven in The Book Thief aanwezig . Leerlingen kunnen dit onderzoeken door zelf een thema, symbool of motief te identificeren of, in een " envelopactiviteit ", een of meer te geven om tijdens het lezen bij te houden. Vervolgens maken de leerlingen een storyboard met de voorbeelden van dat thema uit de tekst . Docenten kunnen leerlingen vragen om meerdere thema's te identificeren, of om meerdere voorbeelden van een enkel thema te illustreren.
