Het concept van Social Stories is in 1991 door Carol Gray gecreëerd om te gebruiken bij kinderen en volwassenen met autisme om hen beter te helpen bij een verscheidenheid aan sociale situaties. Tegenwoordig is het gebruik van sociale verhalen uitgebreid tot alle soorten studenten , inclusief die met aanzienlijke communicatietekorten.
