För många litterära verk, särskilt romaner, är karaktärsutveckling avgörande. Litterära karaktärer driver handlingen och konflikten; de skapar en anledning till att en berättelse existerar. Att kartlägga karaktärer kan vara så enkelt som att be eleverna att fylla i diagram som spårar viktiga aspekter av karaktärer, eller så komplext som att notera egenskaper som kategoriserar dem som en arketyp.
