Events - John Adams appointed federalist judges in supreme court before leaving office. One of them, William Marbury, a spot in the Supreme Court. Shortly after Jefferson arrived in office and paused the commissions.

Events - Marbury did not receive the commission for the position and he was angered. He sued James Madison in the Supreme Court. Chief Justice Marshall agreed Marbury had the right to the commission.

Events - After judicial review, Marshall said it would go against section 13 of the Constitution to force Madison to give up the commission. Therefore Marbury did not get his commission.
