  • Slavery Conditions
  • Harriet Tubman
  • The Underground Railroad
  • As to be expected, slaves weren't very happy being slaves. Harsh work conditions and abuse were just a small fraction of the terrible things that slaves were forced to experience. They wanted out.
  • Fugitive Slave Act
  • Harriet Tubman is a former slave who freed her and her family from a plantation. She would return and get other slaves out of their plantations too.
  • Support Through the Railroad
  • Harriet Tubman, along with other slaves that used the railroad, had a specific safe route that avoided plantations.
  • End of the Railroad
  • The Fugitive Slave Act enforced the capture and return of slaves. It made it so that slaves that escaped to other states would still be considered slaves.
  • Harriet Tubman was associated with other former slaves that wanted to free slaves. This includes Frederick Douglass, who would help guide thousands of slaves to Canada.
  • The Railroad ended at Canada, but could have also lead to places in Mexico, Spanish Florida, and Indian Territories. Slaves were safe here, since it was not American territory.
