- Confederate troops opened fire on Fort Sumpter to begin the Civil War. The north was eager for the Union Army to make an advance on Richmond ahead of the planed meeting on July 20 with the Confederate Congress

- The Union troops wanted to strike a Confederate force. Union troops marched from Washington to strike the Confederate.
- This Battle was fought on a small river called Bull Run.
