  • What a beautiful day in Sighet!
  • Surely Hitler won't be able to kill all of us! Its the 20th century, theres no way.
  • Don't worry, at least we are all together and its just us Jews.
  • These German people are ruining our lives and now they're putting us in ghettos?!
  • This is awful, I'm so scared!
  • Keep walking!
  • When are we going to stop?
  • Faster, Faster!
  • The people of Sighet aren't worried about Hitler attacking their small town. Some townspeople, such as Moishe, has voiced their concerns but most people think that "...Hitler will not be able to harm us, even if he wants to...". (Wiesel 8) Even when German troops arrive in Hungary, they still remain optimistic. They believe "The Germans will not come this far. They will stay in Budapest. For strategic reasons, for political reasons..." (9) The people of Sighet refuse to think that they will get attacked by the Nazis.
  • The German army has made its way into Sighet, and Elie and his family are worried. They have put up all of these Anti-Jew laws and now they are being put in ghettos. But some of the Jews still are being optimistic because "We would no longer have to look at all those hostile faces, [and] have to endure those hate-filled stares." (12) The Jews of Sighet are trying hard to be optimistic in this dreary place, and its good to see these Jews still holding on to the hope that it will be ok.
  • After awhile, Elie's ghetto is forced to be emptied out. Elie has to wait in the sweltering heat to be counted, and then he is ordered to march for a long time. He notes that during the walk "My father was crying. It was the first time I saw him cry." (19) He also noticed his sister Tzipora, who had "on her back a bag too heavy for her." While he is watching his family struggle, the police are also pushing them to go faster and to keep walking, which is a difficult task to do. Overall, these Jews have a long journey ahead and a lot of adversity to overcome.
