At first, Salva is introduced at school learning Arabic. He is day dreaming about playing with cows at home. At this point there is nothing exciting going on and its displaying his regular life in the beginning of the book.
Next in the story, Salva and his classmates were hearing gunshots which were coming from the rebels. The rebels had been doing this because they were fighting for freedom of religion. Their professor had told them to run to the "Bush" to get away.
Salva is captured by the rebels and is put in a camp. He tries to join the men group but the soldiers put him in the group of woman, children, and elders. He is worried about losing his family and if they are still alive
here Salva and Buska are on the hunt for honey from a bees nest. They were using a honey-guides to lead them to the bees nest. When they finally made it, they smoked the bees and attempted to take the honey. The smoke didn't last long though and they were stung.
This is when Salva and his group are traveling across the Nile with the boats they built. In their travel they had come across a village on an island where they were provided food and water. They had slept there and went back on their long journey across the Nile.
This scene is where Salva and his group are crossing the desert. They are running low on water and are slowly dying in the heat. Many people are left behind and would eventually die of dehydration
