The Persians are coming to Athens because we helped the Ionians and they are mad. Darius I and his army are coming to Greece!
Battle of Marathon 490 BC
The Persians landed their ships at the Bay of Marathon.Athens killed 6000 Persians. The hoplites used the phalanx battle formation to defeat the Persians. Some of the Persians tried to go to Athens to capture the city. Pheidippides ran 26 miles to Athens to tell them the Persians were coming. Athens fought the Persians and they won.
King Leonidas I and 300 soldiers fought the Persians at Thermopylae. The Greeks killed thousands of Persians but the Persians figured out how to get behind them. A lot of the soldiers left but Leonidas stayed with 300 soldiers. They fought the Persians as long as they could but all died.

The Persian army marched to Greece but no one was there. The people had left but the soldiers were waiting on ships . The Persians attacked the Greeks. The Persians had a lot more ships. The Athenians had trireme ships. They were fast and easier to move. They crashed into the Persian ships making them sink. Xerxes and the Persians retreated.

After Xerxes retreated the Greeks defeated the Persians at the Battle of Plateau in 479 BC. Xerxes went back to Persia and the Persians did not attack Greece again.

Effects of the Persian WarAthens and Sparta both said they were the winners of the war. Sparta was weak and Athens was powerful. Athens made an alliance with other city states for protection from Persia. Athens had a Golden Age of economics and culture.
