  • Jane's Halloween
  • Sensation Basics
  • Sight
  • One day on a Halloween morning, Jane walked down the stairs and had a big surprise in store for her.
  • Touch
  • She ran down to the kitchen and heard very loud spooky music. "Mom, Its too loud in here!" "Don't worry Jane, you'll get used to the sound! Right now you are getting the sensation or feeling of noise from the music, but if you focus on other things, your sensory receptors which are basically what helps you sense things, will adapt to the music and it won't be as loud. That is called Habituation."
  • Hearing
  • When Jane saw her mom, she was surprised! "Mom your eyes are red and you have fangs, am I seeing things right!" "That's right hon, I have red eye contacts and fake teeth and you are seeing things perfectly fine. You see the color of my eyes? Light and color are entering your eyes through something called a wavelength. When light hits your retina which is in the back of your eyes, the light turns into electrical signals which give your brain the image that you see. when there are different colors hitting your eye, there are different wave lengths for different colors such as red or green. This is called the Trichomatic Theory. This is also why some people are color blind, because their retina doesn't respond to colors the way ours do.
  • "C'mon", Jane's mom said, "Try on your costume and come downstairs to show me" "I love my costume mom, but it is so itchy that it scratched me and it hurts. Why do I feel all of this?" Jane's mom thought for a second and then said, "What you are feeling right now is your sense of touch. Your skin is packed with skin receptors that tell you if you feel something hot, cold, smooth, rough, wet and dry. The gate control theory says that if you distract your body's nerves while in pain, then the pain will be less. So! are you excited to trick-or-treat today, Jane?" "Kind of." Jane said. "I'm worried that if I want to race with my friends, I will fall over." Jane's mother began to laugh. "Honey, your kinisthetic sense allows you to run while your Vestibular sense gives you balance. You shouldn't worry, your body knows what it's doing.
  • Later that day, Jane could hear the loud noises of children screaming and laughing. It was time to go outside and trick-or-treat. She went to her mom and said "wow, they are so loud, it makes me wonder, how can I even hear?" "Well Jane, our ear is made of three different parts, the outer ear, the middle ear and the inner ear. The outer ear is what you see on the sides of your head. it funnels noise towards your ear canal which leads to the middle ear. The middle ear is an air-filled cavity that turns sound waves into vibrations and delivers them to the inner ear.The vibrations from the middle ear change into nerve signals in the inner ear and brings it to the brain. That's how you hear things!" Wow Jane said, "That sure sounds complicated. I wonder about people who's ears don't work like ours". "Well Jane, there are people who are deaf, which means they can't hear anything, those who are Hard of hearing who can't hear very well and many more" "Wow" Jane said in awe. "I think it's time to go outside and trick or treat mom! Lets go!"
