Becca Jones, a girl of 14, just witnessed her dad going to jail for embezzlement. Her mom is forcing her to move for her freshman year, to somewhere where no one will know about Becca's dad.
Becca arrives at her new school and meets new friends that help her feel comfortable. In the beginning of her senior year, she learns about several scholarships, including the Whitney Court Scholarship. She writes about Whitney, and uncovers something she never expected.
Becca remains as a finalist for the Whitney Court Scholarship Essay. She enters the interview and she is greeted by the one and only Whitney Court. Her parents inform her that she is mentally ill. Whitney's parents then say to Becca they believe she is menatally ill. Becca is astonished by them saying that, and then tells them the horrible truth of her actual life.
Becca tells her mom what happened at the interview. Her mom uncovers a secret Becca would never have thought of. Her dad is not who she though of him as. His name is not Roger Jones, but Robert Catri. She is furious at her mom, but she says she did it to protect Becca. Becca comes to the conclusion her whole life is a lie.
Becca goes on a college touring trip with her friends. But, Becca has something else intended when she gets there. She is going to meet with her mom's agent, that helps with issues with her dad. After Becca goes to the meeting and receives a letter from her dad, she visits him at his cell.
After Becca's trip, her and her mom go to see the agent at a local cafe. While meeting with him, undercover FBI agents arrest him for his crimes. Afterwards, Becca and her mom are able to live a normal life as they wait for Becca's dad to be released. Becca is able to enjoy homecoming and have the best time with her love, Oscar.
