St Ignatius was of Loyola was a soldier, and 1521 he was defending the fortress of Pamplona against the French. he then was injured in this battle by a cannonball then the french carried hime back on a two week trip to his family's castle in basque country.
While St Ignatius was recovering he though a lot about the battle of Pamplona but he also though about devoting a life to god. He found in his reflections that following gods way made him feel more fulfilled. so this is the life he decided to chose he gave up being a soldier. He also gave his clothes to the poor.
As Ignatius began to recover he wanted to make good of his past life and began to live a life of devotion and dedication to god. He spent many weeks in a monastery praying and fasting. he began to have an inner peace and freedom and began a pilgrimage. he walked all the way to Jerusalem.
