  • Love is not all: it is not meat nor drink
  • This line in the poem builds to the overall message of the poem that though love does not keep one alive it is something people need, and risk their lives for.
  • Yet many a man is making friends with death Even as I speak, for lack of love alone.
  • This line in the poem shows that even love is not a necessity to sustain life it is treated as such.
  • There is an alternate rhyme in this poem for example, breath and death, and hour and power. This occurs every other line.
  • Line 8 is where the turn occurs. It goes from a melancholy to a more hopeful outlook on love. the shift in the tone indicates the lengths one would go for love over their more basic human needs.
  • It well may be that in a difficult hour, Pinned down by pain and moaning for release,
  • These two lines tell you about the sacrifices that you may make for love, and the difficulties one can face as a consequence of being in love.This once again reinforces the theme of love being as important as food and water though it has consequences.
  • I might be driven to sell your love for peace, Or trade the memory of this night for food. It well may be. I do not think I would.
  • These three lines show the importance of love in peoples lives and the measures people will take to preserve it. The theme of the poem in the final lines and throughout its entirety remain that love is as important as the air one breaths.
