End of 1st Punic War
In 264BCE, the Carthaginians owned and controlled the island of Sicily. A small group of Roman fortune seekers, the Mamertines, occupied small spaces on the island. Carthage reclaimed their territory and captured some Mamertines in the process.
Beginning of 2nd Punic War
After being informed of the captured "Romans", Rome declared war on Carthage to defend and free them. Although Rome was not experienced at sea. To fight against the highly developed Carthaginian Navy they developed innovative tech and captured a warship from Carthage as a model.
A Carthaginian general named Hamilcar Barca recaptured large portions of Sicily. But, Carthage did not have the money or men to keep waging war in Sicily. In 241BCE, Carthage gave up Sicily to Rome.
End of 2nd Punic War
Hamilcar Barca's son, Hannibal, who had pledged a blood oath to his father to never befriend the Romans began to invade Rome Through the Alps. He led 40,000 men and 37 war elephants.
Hannibal's army won 3 battles before the first major battle. In the Battle of Cannae the Romans were surrounded and lost between 50,000 and 80,000 soldiers. The Romans withdrew from Northern Italy and instead focused on defense of Rome.
In 202BCE, a Roman general named Scipio Africanus led an army to attack mainland Carthage. Hannibal was called back to help defend his country. But, without Hannibal in Italy he left it open for recapture. And his loyal soldiers were replaced by mercenaries. Rome defeated Hannibal and won the war.
