The first European to sight New Zealand was Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. He was on an expedition to discover a great Southern continent ‘Great South Land’ that was believed to be rich in minerals. In 1642, while searching for this continent, Tasman sighted a ‘large high-lying land' And went straight towards it with no thinking of any bad possibilities.
They arrived at their destination not realising there were Maori who had already claimed this land. The Maori send out a Waka to communicate with what the europeans wanted, and things didn't go down very good, with the Maori killing 4 of the europeans men with an idea that the europeans were here to attack and take their land.
They came back with the bad news but the British Government still thought that Aotearoa would be a good base in the Pacific for Britain. So instead of backing down the Goverment sent many British families on ships to start a new life in a land they had never seen on the other side of the world, and to try and make peace
