  • The first European to sight New Zealand was Dutch explorer Abel Tasman. He was on an expedition to discover a great Southern continent ‘Great South Land’ that was believed to be rich in minerals. In 1642, while searching for this continent, Tasman sighted a ‘large high-lying land' And went straight towards it with no thinking of any bad possibilities.
  • They arrived at their destination not realising there were Maori who had already claimed this land. The Maori send out a Waka to communicate with what the europeans wanted, and things didn't go down very good, with the Maori killing 4 of the europeans men with an idea that the europeans were here to attack and take their land.
  • They came back with the bad news but the British Government still thought that Aotearoa would be a good base in the Pacific for Britain. So instead of backing down the Goverment sent many British families on ships to start a new life in a land they had never seen on the other side of the world, and to try and make peace
