  • There was a war between Great Britain and France. It was known as the French and Indian War. After the war the British needed money to pay their taxes for the war. Even after Britain made a deal with the colonists to leave them alone, they still started taxing them. They started taxing them with the Townshend Act (1767), Stamp Act (1765) and the Intolerable Acts (1774) and other taxes. The colonist protested with the Boston Tea Party (1773). All this lead to this battle. This frame depicts the Lexington and Concord battle of 1775.
  • The battle lead to the 2nd Continental Congress meeting with representation from each of the 13 colonies. It occurred the same year as the Lexington and Concord battle. Here they are discussing the British and decided to resist them by fighting for their independence. George Washington was selected to lead the Continental army.

  • Thomas Paine agreed with these colonists. It was time to fight for their independence! In 1776, Thomas Paine wrote his famous pamphlet called "Common Sense". It explained the arguments for independence in a way that was easy for everyday colonists to understand. He encouraged people to support the fight for independence from Britain.
  • Six months after Paine finished "Common Sense" the Declaration of Independence was written and signed in 1776 in Philadelphia. Yay! Independence at Last!
