- Once upon a time, there was a strong monarchy in France. But one day the king died and his inexperienced grandson got the crown but because of his inexperience people of France suffered after heavy burden of taxes especially the 3rd estate who were the working class. The revolution started when people couldn’t get bread because no one could afford it and Marie Antoinette spent all of France’s money on her lavish life.
- The revolution started officially after the estate meeting(national assembly) that king Louis XVI refused changes in and kept the taxes the same. The national assembly formed a declaration of rights and limited king Louis’s power.
- After the monarchy lost many of its powers in the September massacres and became only a constitutional monarchy, Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette attempted to escape. But they were unlucky and the guards got them before they escaped and were able to get help from neighboring countries.
- After Marie Antoinette and King Louis XVI got executed the time that followed was known as the reign of terror. The reign of terror was led by Robespierre and his national convention. In this time it is estimated that twenty thousand or more people have died
- Napoleon Bonaparte was a military leader who led a coup d’etat against the directory of France. During Napoleon’s time as consul, he won many important battles and the people of France were happy. They allowed him to become emperor and he formed many good laws such as the Napoleonic code. But after winning against many countries and expanding the empire of France neighboring countries united against him and his last straw was in the battle of waterloo which he lost and was exiled for the rest of his life.
- The congress of Vienna was a series of international meetings that are known as the concert of Europe. It was an attempt by the leader of Metternich to restore the balance of power in Europe. To balance power Metternich wanted the return of a legitimate ancestor or a descendant of former kings/Queens and someone who returned due to that was Louis XVIII Louis XVI’s brother.
