- One cause was that the British navy blocked the American Coast and interfered with trade.
- The British government is stopping our trade.And we cannot expand our land one bit.

- Another cause of the war was the impressment of the U.S. sailors into the British navy .

- In 1813, under the leadership of Oliver Hazard Perry U.S. naval forces were victorious and as a result they gained control of Lake Erie.

- In August of 1814, a British army invaded Washington D.C. Several buildings were lit on fire and burned and President Madison was scared for his life and had to flee.
- In September of 1814, the British attacked Fort McHenry on the Baltimore port. The attack went on all night and in the morning Frances Scott Key saw the American flag still standing. and was inspired to write 'The Star Spangled Banner.'
