FOIL CHARACTER
David knows he's different, and throughout the book he utilizes his differences to benefit himself. He almost wants to be different and embraces himself as he is, since his ability is so useful. He's also very brave, since he's always taking risks to save not only himself but those around him like when he stayed back at Sophie's house the night she left. And when he is running away, he shows he's resourceful as he's constantly coming up with clever, creative ideas that can get them out of problems and dangerous situations. He also shows he's caring when he's running away, as he's taking care of everyone around him such as Rosalind and Petra.
In the book, Joseph tries his best to be as normal as possible, as he believes anything abnormal or slightly weird is considered very wrong and a disgrace. And although on the outside he seems very strict and scary to others, inside he's very cowardly and is scared of change and the abnormal. He's also shown as merciless, since he went out to kill his own son after finding out that he was a mutant. He believes in religion so much to the extent he would kill his own child.
