- Author Paul Sheldon is in a car wreck in the middle of SIdewinder, Colorado, after finishing writing his new novel Fast Cars. He wakes up in a strangers secluded cabin, and later finds out it is his "number one fan", ex-nurse Annie Wilkes.
- FALLING ACTION
- Annie's obsession with Paul becomes dark as she forces him to drink dirty water, starves him, deprives him of medicine, cuts off his limbs, and forces him to write a novel against his will. When Annie's gone, Paul ventures out of the guest room where he's kept and takes what he needs to stay alive.
- RESOLUTION
- After Paul burns the book he was forced to write, him and Annie fight it out. The brawl goes on for several minutes before Paul slams his typewriter in Annie's head and kills her.
- Paul manages to crawl out of the bedroom and gets the attention of the police officers who were investigating the disappearance of an officer Annie killed days earlier. They come in to find the bedroom where Annie's body laid now empty. They look around and see that Annie had climbed out of the window and her dead body now laid in the snow.
- Paul returns to his New York home and publishes the extra copy of the book he burned while at Annie's, and it instantly becomes a bestseller. Although it's been years, Paul still struggles from pill withdrawal, alcoholism, and seeing Annie's face in his dreams, reflections, and everyday life.
