- Slavery was such a main cause of the civil war, there the Northerners who felt slavery was wrong and that it should be banned, They helped slaves become free and move to free states like Canada (They were called abolitionist). While Southerners felt slavery was needed and would use black african Americans for things like picking cotton, and they would live at places called Plantations
- Bleeding Kansas was led by John Brown who believed God sent him down from heaven to get rid of Slavery. This was was between pro and anti slavery believers. The war was for who could take control of the new territory of Kansas under the doctrine of popular sovereignty
- The election of President Abraham Lincoln. Southerners thought that Lincoln was against slavery and had the views of the North. 7 states broke away from the Union before Lincoln's presidency.
