- Ahoy there! I'm Abel Tasman and I was the first european to discover New Zealand in 1642!
- Arrrrgh me hearties! I'm James Cook and I am one of the greatest explorers of all time! In 1770, I charted New Zealand and the Great Barrier Reef of Australia on my ship HMB Endeavour.
- Sealing began during the second half of the 18th century. Sealing was used for trades in ancient times. Their skins were used to make water proof jackets and boots.
- From the 1790's, European whalers came and began to hunt whales. The whales are fat (blubber) for high grade oil for lamps. This oil was used for trades.
