- T.J. R.W. and Melvin are in Strawberry are breaking into Mr. Barnett's store.
- Kaleb Wallace, R.W, Melvin, and the other night men come to take care of T.J after the news of Mr. Barnett's death got out.
- Papa set fire to the cotton, making it appear to have been struck by lightning, effectively distracting the night men from T.J. and ending the conflict.
