  • In "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street" by Rod Serling, one of the main themes is Mankind is it's own worst enemy. This is one of the main themes because Steve, one of the residents on Maple Street, suggested a check on the neighborhood to suspect who is non-human, this can depict the fact that the residents on Maple Street cannot trust each other, although they have known each other for a long time. Adding onto this, when Les Goodman's car had suddenly turned on out of nowhere, all of the residents turned on Les and immediately accused him of being an alien. This can also show that the residents of Maple Street do not trust each other, although Les Goodman's car could have gotten a malfunction, a last reason that can contribute to the theme is the fact that Charlie shot and killed Pete Van Horn, who was a human. Charlie had no reason to kill him. All of these scenes in the story can depict how the theme Mankind is it's own worst enemy can fit the story of "The Monsters Are Due on Maple Street".
