  • Yeah!!
  • We want equal power!
  • Rise of the Roman Republic from a Patrician's Perspective
  • Compromise.
  • Around 509 B.C.E, we, the Romans, overthrew the Etruscan government, and developed a republic, and because of the old Etruscan rule, I had the benefit, as we were divided as patricians, the more powerful. The plebeians follow our orders. I am oh so happy to be a patrician
  • Equality!
  • We, the patricians, ruled for a while after that, regardless of our republic government. Only we could be voted for important government rules, and only we could vote, and the plebeians had to obey out orders. Until, in 494 B.C.E, they were fed up of obeying us and marched right out of the city, and lived on a mountain, refusing to follow our orders. Ugh! It was horribly ridiculous!
  • I should vote _____ about this law
  • Because the Plebians used to follow our orders, Rome was put in a crisis because of lack of work. It was horrible for us! Making us stay here with absolutely no help?!? We had no choice but to compromise.
  • They gained government opportunities, which were called the Tribunes of the Plebs, which had the power to veto actions by the Senate. They also gained voting power to vote the Tribunes of the Plebs. They got their own council as well! As if that wasn't enough, they still wanted more power, because they still had less than us. For the next 200 years, they fought for equal power, and, gradually, won equality.
  • We agreed, so we couldn't change the horrible laws, for the laws to be transcribed. So in 451 B.C.E., the laws were published on a tablet called the Twelve Tables. Then, in 367 B.C.E., a new law was stated that one of the two consuls just had to be a plebeian. Are you kidding me? That law gave them the power to become a Senate! Then, in 287 B.C.E., the plebeians earned the right to pass laws for all Roman Citizens! The citizens association could now approve or reject laws. We lost so much power!!
